What is a Derivative?
The 5 Main Derivative Rules
Special Case Derivatives: Your new multiplication tables
1 of 2

Example 1: Derivative of a Constant

Differentiate y = 5 with respect to x.

Step 1: Simplify and look for algebraic rewrites.

There are none here.

y = 5

Step 2: Identify any term(s) that are just a constant.

Here the entire equation is a constant.

y = 5

Step 3: Take the derivative of the constant, which will always be zero.

dy dx = 0

Final Result:

The derivative of y = 5  is  dy dx = 0 .

Meaning:

          The equation for finding the slope of any tangent line of y = 5   is dy dx = 0 .

          The instantaneous rate of change for the entire equation is zero, there is no change.
