Rule 5: Chain Rule

Chain Rule

Recipe: ( DIN )( DOUT )

Read: D-IND-OUT

DIN means the derivative of the inside piece.

DOUT means the derivative of the outside piece.

Note : The order that you multiply the two pieces together does not matter, 5×4 is the same as 4×5. You may see your teacher perform the same process just reversing the order, ( DOUT )( DIN ).

I have found that most of my students do better with the chain rule process when they work from the inside to the outside. Like with the product rule, you need to pick your one way of doing the process and stick with it.
