If the equation you are being asked to find the derivative of has variables all mixed together, and no matter what you try, you cannot get the equation to a format of the y-piece (dependent variable) on one side of the equals and all the x’s (independent variables) are on the other side of the equals.

Or if you are being asked to take the derivative “with respect to” a variable that does not match with the variables in your equation. You have an equation with x’s and y’s and you are being asked to take a derivative “with respect to” t.
